Hike & Bike

Pickett County’s beautiful lake views and rolling hills are a nature lovers paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. Cordell Hull Birthplace located in Pickett County offers a beautiful hike to Bunkum Cave. The cave is reached via the Bunkum Cave Trail. The trail is moderate with gentle hills. It is approximately 0.50 miles to the cave. The entrance to the cave is an impressive 100 feet wide by 50 feet tall. The cave length is approximately one mile in length. A short drive to the edge of the county lies Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, with 11,750 acres of pristine wilderness with scenic botanical and geological wonders. More than 58 miles of hiking trails meander through the wilderness of Pickett State Park and the surrounding forest. They vary in length and difficulty, from short day-use trails suitable for families to longer multi-day backpacking trails. A backcountry camping permit is required through the park office. Mountain bike riding has become one of the more popular recreational activities enjoyed by visitors to Big South Fork.

Currently at Big South Fork there are several trails which have been designed, built and are maintained by the Big South Fork Mountain Bike Club. In addition to bike only trails, mountain bikes are allowed on highway edges, backcountry roads and some horse trails.
